GPT Scape
ChatGPT content is detectable today with ZeroGPT like plagiarized content was detectable in 2004 with Copyscape.
Apologies for starting with a rant, but…
It doesn’t make sense to publish content generated from a simple input or question on ChatGPT. Soon, everyone will be able to enter that same input or question into a Google-like search field. They’ll get the answer directly from the AI source, rendering your AI-generated SEO article irrelevant.
This also makes attaining search traffic growth via AI-generated content irrelevant. Eventually, it will not rank because it’s duplicate content, duplicated from the original AI source. There’s no need for Google and Bing to surface it after they fully integrate AI into their search engines.
There’s already technology publicly available that lets you detect content created with ChatGPT, so you can be sure that Google and Bing have this technology as well. The technology can be accessed through a tool called ZeroGPT that identifies whether an article is fully or partially produced by AI down to a percentage.
ZeroGPT functions like Copyscape did in 2004 for checking plagiarized content. You may know Copyscape from tacky SEO agencies and freelance content writers who said their content was Copyscape-verified, plagiarism-free. As it should be. That's like saying I breathed air to write this blog post. As I should.
By all means, use generative AI tools like ChatGPT for research and content repurposing. But don’t use them as a shortcut to creating content that will help you earn trust and contribute to sustainable growth. If you do, you’ll be left with bucket content. You might see some short-term spikes in vanity metrics but they’ll eventually dip and you’ll be back at square one, this time with a tarnished brand.
End rant.
Now for some ways you can effectively use ChatGPT and other generative AI tools without getting dinged:
Turn original notes into an article. Tell ChatGPT to “Turn these notes into an article” and paste in your notes. It won’t be a great article but it’s something you can work with if you’re not in the mindset to create something from scratch.
Repurpose original articles for sharing. Publishing is part one of content marketing, part two is sharing. But creating content for sharing can be a drag. Instead of creating it from scratch, tell ChatGPT to “Repurpose this article into a tweet/twitter thread/LinkedIn post” and you’ll have something you can work with.
Create original images. Unlike ChatGPT, you can create original content from scratch with DALL-E by OpenAI, the same company behind ChatGPT. This tool can create original images with a simple prompt. For example, I used the prompt: “robot holding two apples and tossing one in garbage can, pencil art” to create the image for this newsletter.
Using ChatGPT with the first two points will help you avoid duplicate content and use the tool as it was intended: as a content assistant, not a content creator. I expect designers might feel the same way about DALL-E but I’ll do what I can as a writer first. The AI force is powerful.
Do you use ChatGPT and other generative AI for content creation or assistance?
Robert: Thanks for the follow-up. I read the thread and it reflects the confusion about AI. Honestly, if I could avoid seeing one more article about the threats of AI it would be too soon. It's a tool and like one of the commenters said, everything they write is detected as AI.
I recently rearranged my office and came across my copy of Roget's Thesaurus. I miss those days of writing school papers and looking for just the correct word. Most students, today, wouldn't know how to use it. They would simply right-click and choose a synonym.
Marketing communication is far different writing thought pieces and fiction. But, one of them pays the bills. AI helps to get that done faster.
Have a great week!
Robert: These are some good thoughts. I use AI for research and usually have to edit the output for clarity, CTA, and duplicates. My version writes like a 9th Grader. For example... To Include... and sometimes repeats entire phrases. It still boosts my productivity so that I can compete with many of the third-world writers.
There is a way to pass the detection test through the use of AI.
